      Give storm flow enough mesh

      More mesh area reduces splash and gives water another path when leaves begin covering the base of a basket.

      Keep the basket above stored water

      A high-wall screen prevents captured debris from soaking when the tank reaches its maximum operating level.

      Block insects and sunlight

      Mosquito-proof stainless mesh closes the inlet; a cover, solar shield, or hood reduces light that can encourage algae.

      Protect the overflow too

      The overflow must pass the incoming flow without becoming an unprotected route for mosquitoes, frogs, or other pests.
