1. Potable and nonpotable water
Do not drink or use harvested rainwater for cooking, oral care, food preparation, or other potable purposes unless the complete system is specifically designed, installed, treated, maintained, and tested for that use. Water quality can change with roofing materials, debris, animals, smoke, chemicals, storage conditions, temperature, and maintenance. A clear appearance does not establish safety.
Label nonpotable outlets, protect them from unintended use, and follow public-health guidance. Treatment equipment must be matched to the actual water source and maintained on schedule. Laboratory testing and qualified professional advice may be necessary.
2. Cross-connections and plumbing
Never create an unprotected connection between a rainwater system and a public or potable water supply. Required separation, air gaps, backflow prevention, inspections, and licenses vary by system and jurisdiction. Before connecting any system to building plumbing or a public water supply, consult the local authority and a properly licensed plumber or rainwater-system professional. 3. Tank location and structural loads
Water weighs about 8.34 pounds per U.S. gallon, excluding the tank and equipment. A full tank can impose an extreme load. Use a stable, level, properly prepared foundation sized for the full operating load and site conditions. Keep tanks away from unstable slopes, undermined soil, traffic impact, and structures not designed for the load. Obtain engineering advice when foundation, soil, wind, seismic, retaining-wall, rooftop, or elevated-platform conditions are uncertain.
4. Installation hazards
- Follow manufacturer requirements for anchoring, venting, overflow, fittings, flexible connections, burial, and water level.
- Route overflow so it cannot erode foundations, flood structures, create traffic hazards, or affect neighboring property.
- Use fall protection and qualified workers for roofs, ladders, gutters, and elevated work.
- Use safe lifting equipment and methods. Large products can shift, roll, crush, or catch wind even when empty.
- Protect excavations and locate utilities before digging. Do not enter a tank or other confined space without a compliant confined-space program.
- Keep lids and openings secured against children, animals, insects, and unauthorized entry.
5. Pumps, pressure, and electricity
Electrical equipment must be properly rated, grounded, protected, and installed under applicable electrical codes. Never service energized equipment. Isolate power and relieve pressure before opening pumps, filters, valves, or piping. Include appropriate pressure relief, dry-run protection, freeze protection, and safe controls where required.
6. Product selection and compatibility
Verify the exact SKU, dimensions, capacity, inlet and outlet sizes, materials, chemical compatibility, temperature limits, pressure rating, and intended use before purchase and installation. Do not rely on a representative family image to identify fittings or included parts. Current manufacturer labels, manuals, and specifications control over a conflicting website summary.
7. Codes, permits, and local requirements
Building, plumbing, electrical, health, zoning, stormwater, fire, utility, and property-association requirements vary. The customer and installer are responsible for confirming permits and approvals before work begins. 8. Inspection and maintenance
Inspect roofs, gutters, screens, first-flush devices, tank openings, overflows, pumps, treatment equipment, and water quality on an appropriate schedule. Stop using equipment that leaks, shifts, cracks, becomes contaminated, exposes wiring, operates outside specifications, or shows other unsafe conditions. Keep maintenance records for potable or regulated uses.
9. Emergency and fire use
Do not treat a calculator result or ordinary rainwater system as an approved fire-suppression design or guaranteed emergency water supply. Fire protection requires authority approval, dependable access, dedicated capacity, compatible fittings, flow and pressure calculations, and professional design. In an emergency, call 911 and follow public-authority instructions.
